HILTON HEAD – Newberry women’s tennis won out 7-2 over York (Pa.) in what proved to be a successful start to their stint in Hilton Head.

The Wolves made quick work of doubles play with No. 1 Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila grabbing the 8-0 sweep to begin the afternoon. The pair of Rebeca Martinez and Joelle Husle followed suit with the 8-2 decision, while Morgan Powers and Korina Martinez another Newberry win 8-4.

With Newberry holding the 3-0 advantage heading into singles, No. 1 Amanda Carrillo secured the tight 6-4, 6-4 victory to lead off the action.

The winning streak continued for the Wolves with Aguirre (6-0, 6-2), Davila (6-1, 6-2), Martinez (6-0, 6-1), and Husle (6-0, 6-0) nabbing four consecutive two-set decisions.

York would pick up two victories in singles competition, but it would not be enough to overcome Newberry’s burst to open the match.

Newberry will remain in Hilton Head and face Florida Southern on Saturday, March 3 at 9:00 a.m.
