CAYCE, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team gave a valiant effort against No. 39 Queens University of Charlotte, falling 5-4 to the defending South Atlantic Conference Tournament champions Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis Center.
Newberry (11-5, 3-1 SAC) got off to a strong start, winning two of three doubles matches over Queens (6-1, 4-0 SAC) to start the match. Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo were narrow 9-8 winners at No. 1, and Marta Gomar and Rebeca Martinez scored an 8-6 decision at No. 3.
The Royals were dominant in singles play, winning four out of six matches. Carrillo scored her tenth singles victory of the season at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Gomar closed out the scoring for Newberry, winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Queens won the remaining contests in straight sets.
Newberry will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne (6-7, 1-3 SAC) tomorrow for a South Atlantic Conference match. Match time is scheduled to begin at Noon.
