AUSTIN, Texas – Elizabeth Williamson was voted a Third Team Academic All-American by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), making her the fifth Newberry student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American this season.

A Carterbury, New Zealand product, Williamson earned all-South Atlantic Conference honors for the third year in a row when she was named to the league’s first team in both singles and doubles action in April. She closed her career with 104 total victories split evenly between singles and doubles action. Her 52 singles wins are the most by any Newberry women’s tennis player since the Wolves became an NCAA institution.

Williamson went 20-2 in singles play this season, including a 10-1 mark in SAC competition. She accumulated a 19-4 ledger in doubles action with nine wins coming inside the conference. She was twice named AstroTurf SAC Player of the Week and earned Co-Athlete of the Month honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference in April.

Williamson graduated in May with a 3.97 GPA in Biology. Her selection sets the Newberry Department of Intercollegiate Athletics record for most Academic All-Americans in a single year. Williamson joins Sam Hall (Football, 1st Team), Madison Darby-McClure (Volleyball, 3rd Team), Jeff Sneed (Baseball, 2nd Team), and Ben Herring (Baseball, 2nd Team) as Newberry’s top scholar-athletes in 2016-2017.

Her selection came as a member of CoSIDA's at-large team, which honors student-athletes in sports that do not have their own individual Academic All-America team; student-athletes in a total of 14 women's sports are eligible for inclusion on this team. Williamson is the first Newberry tennis player, male or female, to receive the prestigious honor and one of eight female student-athletes from South Atlantic Conference institutions to be named an Academic All-American on this year's at-large team.
