NEWBERRY - Newberry and Lynn found themselves locked in a scoreless battle in the waning moments of Sunday morning's nonconference clash at the Smith Road Complex, but the Fighting Knights broke through with a late goal to escape with a 1-0 win.
As the end of regulation neared, Lynn (2-2) seized an opportunity to surge into the lead. Jamie Perriello worked into space down the left side of the penalty area and fired a pass back toward the middle for an open Valenina Pedretti, whose shot from eight yards out dribbled into the goal in the 87th minute. The Lynn defense locked down Newberry's (1-3) attackers over the final three minutes, allowing the Fightning Knights to emerge with the victory.
The Wolves outshot Lynn 18-13, with each team placing seven shots on target. Newberry's offensive pressure was relentless in the second half, forcing Lynn's Alexa Downie to make five saves after the intermission. Two of Daphne Heyaime's three shots were on target, while Aldrete placed half of her four shots on frame. Newberry goalkeeper Jayleen Gant recorded six saves in the contest and was flawless defending Lynn's three corner kicks.
Aldrete nearly put the Wolves ahead early in the contest, launching a shot from 25 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 37th minute. A second-half sequence nearly yielded a goal as well, with shots by Aldrete and Sydney Dempsey forcing Lynn's Downie to make a pair of saves in a 31-second span.
Lynn's offense had impressive moments early in the contest as well. The Fighting Knights took five shots in a 13-minute span early in the first half, but Gant kept the Fighting Knights off the board with three impressive saves.
Lynn was led by Perriello who took three shots, forcing Gant to make two saves, and assisted on the game winner for the Fighting Knights. Pedretti added two shots with one on goal.
The Wolves compete in their first conference matchup of the season as they head to Coker on Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
