NEWBERRY-- Alyssa Ortega and the Newberry College women's team didn't let the weather stop them from taking down the Bobcats of Lees-McRae 2-0 on Thursday.
Ortega wasted no time in giving the Wolves the lead, picking up where she left off after finishing third in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring a season ago. In the 11th minute, she stepped right just inside the top of the box and shot to the left corner of the goal past an outstretched keeper to open the scoring on the game's first shot.
The Wolves kept applying pressure, forcing Bobcats' goalkeeper Alexis Feely to make a pair of saves 10 minutes later. But in the 41st minute, she was no match for Ortega again. A long pass from Morgan Powers down the right side allowed Ortega to find the back of the net from 15 yards out, again aiming for the left corner, that doubled the Wolves' advantage.
Lightning suspended the game for 35 minutes midway through the second half. Both teams were both removed from the facility, but were soon allowed back to finish the contest.
The Wolves excelled on both ends of the pitch firing 26 shots and forcing Feely to make 10 saves. Ortega topped both teams with three shots on frame on five attempts. Winning goalie Korina Martinez captured one save on the day, while newcomer Jayleen Gant caught her first two saves of her career.
Newberry's defense was suffocating, allowing a paltry six shots on the afternoon while smothering several Lees-McRae breakaways.
The Wolves welcome Lander to Smith Road Complex on Sept.2 at 4:30 p.m., and follow on the road against Francis Marion Sept.6 at 5 p.m.
