NEWBERRY - Newberry College head wrestling coach Cy Wainwright has announced the regular season competition schedule for the Wolves' 2017-18 wrestling season.

Wainwright, who enters his second season with the Wolves, saw three wrestlers advance to the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships in Birmingham last season. Newberry returns senior Jordan Simpson, who finished fifth at the NCAA Super Region 2 Tournament to cap off a 25-9 campaign. Joining the ranks of Simpson is junior Patton Gossett who went 3-0 in ECAC competition and advanced to the fifth-place match at the Super Region 2 Championships. Timmy Martinez and Austin Palmer are also returning for the Wolves. Both finished sixth in their respective categories at the NCAA Regionals.

"We are excited for this season. The new core nucleus of our team welcomes solid group of incoming freshman, transfers and returners. The new era of Newberry wrestling is building a foundation for our wrestlers socially, academically, spiritually, and athletically-making sure these aspects encompass who they are beyond there time here at Newberry," stated Wainwright.

The season starts as the Wolves travel to Blacksburg, Va. to participate in the Hokie Open at Virginia Tech on Nov. 5. From there, the Wolves compete in an open tournament at N.C. State (Nov. 19) before returning home to compete in the Newberry Duals on Dec. 3. The Wolves take the road to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on the competition at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 16-17.

Newberry will also compete in the Tracy Borah Duals in  Gunnison, Colo. (Jan. 6) before heading back home to take on Belmont Abbey (Jan. 18) and Limestone (Jan. 23). Super Region 2 duals are scheduled for Jan. 26-27, followed by a road test against King (Feb. 1).

The regular season wraps up with four events, two of them being at home. The Newberry Open will be held on Feb. 3, then the team heads to Emmanuel (Feb. 7) and UNC Pembroke (Feb. 9). Senior Night will be held on Feb. 13 against the Cobras of Coker. The Super Region 2 qualifier tournament will be hosted by University of Findlay on Feb. 23-24, while the NCAA Division II National Tournament will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Mar. 9-10.
