DANBURY, Conn. – Newberry led the Eastern College Athletic Conference with five all-league selections, placing four wrestlers on the All-ECAC Second Team in addition to Trung Duong’s first-team nod by the league’s coaches.
Newberry has a league-high 12 all-conference selections in its two seasons as ECAC members. The Wolves have also captured both league championships and have gone 11-1 in ECAC duals in their time in the conference.
Trung Duong – First Team, 125 pounds
Duong capped off his senior season by finishing fifth at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships and becoming Newberry’s 34th All-American in 12 years of NCAA competition. He finished at 28-6 on the season, including 17-1 in duals, and was a perfect 6-0 with two falls and a tech fall inside the ECAC.
Duong’s longest winning streak of the season stretched from January 5 to February 25, when he won 12 consecutive bouts. He tied for the team lead in wins by tech fall (five) and major decision (five) and finished third with five wins by fall. This marks his second consecutive first-team designation from the league.
Jordan Simpson – Second Team, 133 pounds
The junior finished fifth at the NCAA Super Region 2 Tournament to cap off a 25-9 campaign. Simpson was 7-0 in matches decided by fall this season and was 5-1 in conference matches, with his only loss coming to first-team honoree Dustin Kirk of King. He won 14 of his 15 bouts spanning from Dec. 18 to Feb. 25, a stretch that included three falls and three major decisions. He is a two-time all-ECAC honoree after earning first-team honors last season.
Huston Evans – Second Team, 174 pounds
Evans wrapped up his second straight all-ECAC nod, this time at 174 pounds after being named first team at 184 pounds last season and finishing as the national runner-up at 197 pounds as a sophomore in 2015. He went 24-9 on the season and 6-0 in the league, equaling Duong for the team lead in tech falls and major decisions while finishing second to Simpson with six wins by fall. He finished fourth in the region and advanced to the national championship, where he went 1-2 in the first day of competition. He compiled a 12-bout winning streak that spanned seven weeks.
Cody Brundage – Second Team, 197 pounds
A senior from nearby Chapin, Brundage earned his second consecutive second-team designation with a 23-14 campaign and a run to the national championships. Brundage bounced back from an inconsistent stretch midway through the season to win four of his last five regular-season bouts. He finished in fourth in dramatic fashion at the region championships, with a win in sudden victory to force a true fourth-place match that he won 3-1 in overtime, to punch his ticket to Birmingham.
Patton Gossett – Second Team, 285 pounds
Gossett, a sophomore, made his presence felt late in the season. Becoming a mainstay in the lineup in February, Gossett went 3-0 with a fall in ECAC competition and advanced to the fifth-place match at the Super Region 2 Championships before being defeated in a close 3-2 decision. He went 10-7 overall on the season, winning twice by major decision and three times by fall without a loss.
