Three Wolves named to All-Academic Teams

MANHEIM, Pa.Trung Duong, Cody Brundage, and Nick Young were named Academic All-Americans as selected by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.

 

The 2016-2017 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 186 student-athletes from 47 universities and colleges.  38 members were named to the first team, 62 members to the second team, and 86 were named as honorable mention.

 

Trung Duong, a Lynchburg, Va. native, was named All-Academic First-Team. He compiled a 20-3 record this season, pushing his career record to 93-30. Duong is an English & Communications major, and holds a 3.63 overall grade point average.

 

Cody Brundage, who hails from Chapin, S.C., was named All-Academic Second-Team after finishing the 2016-17 year with a 20-11 record. He holds an overall 3.29 GPA as an Education major.

 

Brundage and Duong were two of three Newberry Wrestlers who went to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Birmingham earlier this month.

 

Nick Young, who is from Goose Creek, S.C., was named Honorable Mention after posting a 15-15 record this past year. Young is an education major who holds a 3.44 GPA.

 

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II All-Academic Team, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He must also be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
