DES MOINES, Iowa - The No. 4 Newberry Wolves advanced to the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals for the fifth time in six appearances with a 22-12 win over Fort Hays State in HyVee Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry (10-0) will wrestle No. 3 Central Oklahoma (4-0) at 11 a.m. CST (Noon on the east coast) Sunday with a berth in the events finals at stake. The 10-win streak to start the season ties Newberry's program record to start a season.
No. 3 Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) started the match off with three points for the Wolves with a 4-2 decision over No. 6-ranked Adam Ludwin at 125 lbs. to kick off four straight wins.
Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) was aggressive in an impressive 12-9 decision over Symon Seaton at 133 lbs. before No. 5 B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) earned a late takedown over Charles Napier at 141 lbs. for a 7-6 decision. Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) took a 4-2 decision over Joey Dozier to give Newberry a 12-0 lead after four bouts.
Kayne Melko (Bellaire, Ohio) had a lead in the second period of the 157 lbs. bout before getting caught and pinned, allowing the Tigers to cut into the momentum and halve the lead at 12-6. Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) battled as he wrestled up a weight class but lost the 165 lbs. bout by a 7-6 decision to make it 12-9.
Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) took the momentum back at 174 lbs. with a commanding 12-3 major decision over Josh Rodriguez and Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) pushed Newberry's lead with a 7-2 decision at 184 lbs. Joey Grisko (Gloucester Township, N.J.) lost his bout at 197 lbs. by an 8-1 decision, but his margin clinched Newberry's semifinal appearance.
No. 5 Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) put a great cap on the match, as he took a 10-4 decision over a higher-ranked wrestler in No. 4 Trey Page.
