MANKATO, Minn. - The fourth-ranked Newberry Wolves cruised to a 30-6 win over the Minnesota State Mavericks in the Taylor Center on Wednesday night, claiming the first half of the virtual doubleheader between the two schools.
Newberry moves to 8-0 this season with the win, while MSU-Mankato falls to 2-1. The teams will square off again Saturday at 11 a.m. CST in Des Moines, Iowa, in the first round of the NWCA National Duals.
Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) won by forfeit at 125 lbs. to start the dual before true freshman Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) earned a 12-5 decision at 133 lbs. to stake the Wolves to a 9-0 lead.
No. 5 B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) piled up points on the way to a 15-2 major decision over Alphonso Vruno at 141 lbs. before Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) cruised to an 18-3 technical fall over Weston Droegemueller at 149 lbs. to put the Wolves up 18-0. Kayne Melko (Bellaire, Ohio) earned a 4-3 decision over Adam Cooling at 157 lbs., giving Newberry an unassailable 21-0 lead at the halftime break.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) bumped up a weight class to 165 lbs. and clinched the dual win with a 5-2 decision over Sawyer Hoffman. The Mavericks got their first win of the night at 174 lbs., when Darick Vancura earned a 3-2 decision over Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) with a riding time point.
Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) eked out a low-scoring 2-0 decision at 184 lbs. with a second period escape and a riding time point. Braden Carter (Christiansburg, Va.) conceded a last-second takedown to come up on the wrong end of a 9-7 decision at 197 lbs.
No. 5 Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) closed out the dual with a 5-2 decision over Corby Running, clinching his win with a takedown in the final 15 seconds.
