NEWBERRY – Despite a close contest throughout most of the first half the Wolves fell short to Shepherd 18-9 at Setzler Field.
The Rams would strike back with three straight goals coming within less than a minute to give them the 3-1 edge. Another Shepherd turnover would help the Wolves as Helen Kuhn found Naomi Killian for the score to put Newberry back within one, 3-2, forcing a Shepherd timeout.
Shepherd continued to slip past the Wolves with the score becoming 8-3 at the 13:33 mark. Newberry would stop the Rams’ momentum with Rachel Dillon and Kahler each finding the net to make it 8-5 with nine minutes remaining in the first.
A last second goal from the Rams in the closing seconds would make it 11-5 at the break.
Both teams had ample opportunities to score with only eight shots separating the Wolves from Shepherd. However, the Rams were able to find the goal on 31 of their 35 shots compared to 17 of 27 for Newberry.
Maegan Williams, Sophie Moore, and Kahler would each find the goal in the second half but it would not be enough to overcome an early Shepherd lead. The Wolves would outshoot Shepherd 16-13 in the half.
Kahler tallied a team-high three goals while goalkeeper Brandy Bowman would collect 13 saves on the afternoon.
Newberry won the ground ball battle collecting 46 compared to the Rams’ 43.
The Wolves head back out on the road to face UVa-Wise on Saturday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m.
