NEWBERRY—The Wolves hosted in-state nemesis Erskine on Friday evening and took the win with a final score of 62-37.
Newberry (5-2) had a dominant performance on the night, only trailing once in the first period after a made three-pointer by Erskine’s (2-4) Dareisha Sowell 45 seconds into the game. The Flying Fleet would make the lead hold up for just over two minutes, but a Meg Essex jumper provided the Wolves the lead for good and sparked a 24-1 run spanning nearly 10 minutes.
Courtney Lyons posted a career high in points with 13 points, besting her previous career high by two. She tied other career highs tonight with two blocks, two assists, a perfect two-for-two from the free throw line, three three-pointers made, and four made field goals.
Shelby Britten ended the night with 16 points, two steals, eight assists, one rebound, knocked down four three-pointers, and added six shots from the field over 31 minutes. She has scored 15 or more points in each of Newberry's seven games this season.
Essex added 14 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double while going two-for-three at the charity stripe. Regan McCarty matched Essex's nine boards to establish a new career high.
Newberry ended the contest with 27 points off turnovers, seven second chance points, 24 points in the paint, and four fast break points.
Erskine was led by Christian Brown who produced eight points, three assists, and led both teams with 10 rebounds.
The Wolves will travel to Wingate, N.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 29 to take on conference opponent Wingate at 6:00 p.m.
