NEWBERRY – The women’s basketball team announced their schedule for the upcoming 2017 season.
To kick off the regular season, the Wolves are set to compete in the Southeast Regional Challenge hosted by Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. They are set to face the same two teams that helped commence their season last year in Limestone and Belmont Abbey. Newberry took the win against both teams last year with scores of 62-56 and 69-43 respectively.
"We are set to play Limestone in the Challenge and in my opinion they are a top ten team, but we are looking forward to the competition", said Head Coach Sean Page.
Newberry's home opener will be Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. against nonconference opponent Lees-McRae. The Wolves will be traveling quite a bit with home stints being only for a game or two then traveling to play several away games. "After the SAC Showdown we are set to play at home and then travel for two away games," said Coach Page. "We will be traveling a bit this year, with some home games in between road games."
The conference opener will also be at home, against Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. The Wolves are set to play a total of 13 home games with 10 of those being against South Atlantic Conference foes. Last year in the SAC, Newberry went 14-8 and played in the 2017 SAC Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinals.
Reflecting on the schedule Coach Page states, "We are excited about the schedule and the challenges that we will face throughout the year especially in the SAC. In our nonconference matchups we are set to go head-to-head against two teams that ended up playing in the regionals last year."
