Jerry Dorneker joined the Wolves as an assistant volleyball coach at Newberry College in the fall of 2016. Dorneker comes to Newberry after multiple years at the middle school and club levels.
In 2016, Newberry volleyball set a program record with 16 South Atlantic Conference wins, finishing third during the regular season. The 20 overall victories are the most since Newberry entered the NCAA ranks. The Wolves swept Catawba in the SAC Quarterfinals before falling to Lincoln Memorial in five sets in the semifinals. Newberry finished 20-12 overall and featured four all-SAC selections. Youngman was hired at Newberry after the institution was awarded a Division II Coaching Enhancement Grant.
Dorneker started his coaching career at Lexington Middle School in Lexington, S.C. just over nine years ago. Over the course of his five years there, he led the team to an undefeated home record and an overall record of 76-6. He also won three conference championships.
Dorneker opened his own volleyball club, Intense Volleyball, in 2011. Intense Volleyball is a family-centered and community-driven club that has grown to be one of the most prominent clubs in Columbia. He has since coached and won countless tournaments including two Palmetto Region championships, winning one, and leading that team to Nationals.
Dorneker then pioneered the volleyball programs at two Columbia area schools, Northside Christian Academy, coaching both the Junior Varsity and Varsity level, and at Grey Collegiate Academy. He lost only one match in two years at Grey and won several tournaments with the brand new program. Dorneker also purchased another volleyball club in Rock Hill, S.C. The club is positioning itself to compete against the best teams in the nation with players from South Carolina. Dorneker will still coach at Intense Volleyball in addition to his duties at Newberry College.
"I am thrilled to be a part of a historic College in the state of South Carolina," said Dorneker. "So many young women in the state of South Carolina aspire to play at Newberry College."
