NEWBERRY - Newberry volleyball started the season off with a pair of wins during the first day of the Newberry College Invitational Match. Newberry (2-0) swept UNC Pembroke (0-2) and North Greenville (0-2) 3-0 in both matchups.

Sidra Triplett had a breakout performance leading the Wolves in kills for both games.

The day started with Newberry sweeping UNC Pembroke 3-0 the Eleazer Arena.

It was a quick 5-0 burst for the Wolves but as the set continued the team lost momentum and allowed North Greenville to tie the score at 13-13. From there the Wolves controlled the rest of the set finishing on a 12-5 run.

The Wolves started the second set in similar fashion by taking a commanding 13-4 lead which was led with four kills from Maggie Marsh. Alexis Bryant came off the bench to add an additional two kills. Newberry continued to dominate and ended the set 25-16.

Both teams went back and forth in the third set but Newberry proved victorious with a decisive 25-21 win. Triplett finished with 10 kills.

The Wolves took the court again later in the afternoon to battle North Greenville in front of a crowd of over 300 people.

Newberry started the first set with an 8-4 lead and a North Greenville timeout. The rest of the contest proved to be a battle between teams with the Wolves getting the win 26-24 on an attack error.

After a strong 16-9 start in the second set, the Wolves dropped six straight points to bring the game to a 16-16 tie. North Greenville took the 19-18 lead before Newberry rallied to win the set 25-23.

The Wolves finished the sweep with a 25-20 win and gained their second victory of the day. Four Newberry players recorded double-digit digs in the contest.

"We talk a lot about process, trust, discipline, maturity and today was our first chance to truly take what we've been building for a test drive," said Youngman. "In terms of individuals, I thought our captains, Mary and Kensley, had great taste today and were working to move their teammates in the right direction. And Sidra was just fun to watch offensively."

The Newberry College Invitational Match continues tomorrow with Newberry playing Southern Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. and Lander at 3:00 p.m.
