NEWBERRY – Newberry College Spirit Director Lindsey Swygert has announced the hiring of Carolyne Horton as the coach of the Scarlet Poms.

“I am so excited to have the opportunity to coach the Scarlet Poms,” said Horton. “With 16 years of dance experience I feel certain that I have a great deal of knowledge to offer the young women in this program.”

Growing up, Horton was both a dancer and instructor at Tara’s House of Dance. She trained in several styles of dance including jazz, ballet, lyrical, modern, tap, pom, and hip hop while also winning multiple state and national titles. As an instructor Horton produced and directed performances for competitions, implemented rehearsal schedules, and worked effectively with large and small groups of students to enhance skills.

Horton served as the varsity and junior varsity cheerleading coach at Saluda High School from 2013-2016.

For the past year, Horton has been teaching kindergarten at Johnston Elementary School. She has previously taught first grade at Saluda High School.

Horton’s plan is to “continue to build the program and create a team that leaves a lasting impression.”

Horton graduated from Presbyterian College in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.
