NEWBERRY – The Wolves took both games of the doubleheader against the Jaguars of Augusta with a Game One score of 14-6 in six innings and a 2-0 victory in the following contest.
Haley Simonds was the cog in Newberry’s engine on the day as she would provide ample scoring opportunities in both games. The day saw Simonds go 5-for-8, tally seven RBIs, two runs, one double, a homerun, and three singles. Her sixth inning monster homerun into center field in Game Two extending the lead at 2-0.
However, Simonds did most of her work against the Jaguars in Game One. In the first inning she singled to center field to nab two RBIs. Later on in the fifth she grounded out to the shortstop, not before she clinched an RBI. Her sixth inning bases-clearing double to left field helped boost Newberry’s lead to 13-6.
Game One was a stellar performance as the Wolves’ offensive explosion eventually put the game out of reach from the Jaguars. As a team Newberry scored in five of the six innings with eight of the nine starters ending the game with at least one hit.
Some notable hitters of the contest were McKenzie Barneycastle, Tori Caldwell, Natalie Willis, Simonds, and Allison Van Atta. Newberry in the first, scored on a Simonds single sending Caldwell and Barneycastle home. Van Atta then singled to left field as Simonds went to third base, and Willis scored.
Willis homered to left field in Newberry’s subsequent inning propelling Caldwell and Carpenter home. This is her first home run since last season on Mar. 15 at Augusta.
In the third, Caldwell reached base on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher ultimately scoring Barneycastle before the play was through.
The Wolves added two more runs to their already growing lead in the bottom of the fifth. Simonds grounded out to the shortstop while Willis found her way to third and Caldwell crossed home plate. Willis then scored on a wild pitch.
Simonds’ bases-clearing double came in the final inning and was succeeding by Van Atta’s double to right field that scored Simonds to finish the game.
Chelsey Cunningham took the win and is 2-0 on the season so far. Cunningham only allowed two hits and one run.
Augusta found themselves rounding home three times in the second to tie the game up 3-3 but fell behind as their next scoring opportunity would come in the fourth with two runs. The Jaguars added a run in the sixth to end their efforts at six runs on seven hits.
Today was Simonds’ sixth multiple RBI game as she is on a five-game hitting streak, her longest of the season thus far.
Game Two was secured for Alyssa Ball by Simonds’ insurance run in the sixth. Ball completed the game in the circle for the Wolves and pitched an eight-hit shutout to improve to seven wins on the season.
Newberry’s other scoring play came in the bottom of the first when Willis reached on a dropped fly by the left fielder. The Wolves were very opportunistic on their four hits in contrast to the Jaguars’ eight.
Augusta threatened in the second and seventh. But, both innings left three stranded on three hits. They were led by efforts from Lindsey Stokes, Bella Fernandez, Kendyl Conner, and Alexis Schlein.
Newberry will conclude their three-game homestand tomorrow against Southern Wesleyan in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
