AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Newberry College softball team swept non-conference opponent Augusta Wednesday at Jaguar Field. The Wolves won game one 9-1 in six innings and took game two by a score of 7-3.

Newberry (17-8) got off to a quick start and never looked back, defeating Augusta (7-25) 9-1 in six innings in the opener between the two squads.

Haley Simonds went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Newberry at the plate. Myranda Dills and Allison Van Atta also notched two RBIs and Natalie Willis tallied two runs and two hits.

Van Atta notched her first home run of the season in the fourth, hitting a two-run blast to left field, upping Newberry’s lead to 4-0.

The Wolves broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits and an error. Newberry took advantage of four Augusta errors in the opening contest.

Devon Morrison was strong once again in the circle, pitching 6.0 innings allowing just one run. She notched her tenth win of the season, equaling her total from last season.

Willis led the way at the plate in game two with a monster game, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Hailey Drawe went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Wolves would use the long ball early and often against the Jaguars. Willis got the Wolves started in the nightcap with her first home run of the season. Newberry led 2-0 leading into the fifth, before Drawe doubled the advantage with a two-run home run to left center.

Van Atta notched her second home run of the day in the seventh, allowing the Wolves to cruise to a 7-3 victory.

Emily Marchbanks pitched all seven innings for Newberry to earn her sixth victory of the year.

Newberry will open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday against Mars Hill (7-15). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
