PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Newberry softball team earned a sweep against UNC Pembroke Thursday afternoon at LRA Field. The Wolves used a dominate performance from Devon Morrison in game one for a 2-0 victory, before pounding out 17 hits against the Braves for the 10-4 win in game two.

Morrison pitched a gem in the circle for Newberry (15-6) in game one against UNC Pembroke (17-8), tossing a complete game three-hit shutout for her ninth win of the season. Christina Linton led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

Newberry wasted no time, scoring in the top of the first. Haley Simonds smashed a ground ball to second that scored Linton, giving the Wolves a 1-0 advantage.

The Wolves plated an insurance run in the fifth on Hailey Drawe’s single to center that plated Morgan Sweeny.

Morrison allowed a lead-off double, but she then recorded three straight groundouts to preserve the victory for Newberry.

Drawe and Simonds recorded an RBI apiece, and five Newberry batters recorded a hit. UNC Pembroke went 0-8 with runners in scoring position.

Tori Caldwell was on fire at the plate in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Drawe went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Simonds, Myranda Dills and Natalie Willis all recorded two hits for Newberry.

Chelsey Cunningham earned her first victory of the season, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Emily Marchbanks recorded the no-decision after tossing 3.0 innings and notching four strikeouts.

After the Wolves recorded a 2-0 lead, Newberry scored five runs on five hits in the third inning to break open the contest. The frame was highlighted by Caldwell’s two-RBI triple down the left field line.

UNC Pembroke struck back in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Wolves’ lead to 7-4. Newberry put away the game in the fourth, as Simonds crushed a two-run home run over the left centerfield fence. Caldwell poked an RBI single to the pitcher to give Newberry a 10-4 lead it would never relinquish.

Newberry returns to the Smith Road Complex on Saturday to face UVa-Wise (5-7). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
