NEWBERRY – The Newberry College softball team earned a spilt Saturday against St. Augustine’s at the Smith Road Complex. Rachel Marion’s 4-for-4 day powered the Wolves to an 11-3 game one win before falling in game two, 6-5.

Marion recorded four RBIs on four trips to the plate to power Newberry (13-6) past St. Augustine’s (4-8) 11-3 in the opener. Christina Linton, Haley Simonds and Haley Wildes all notched two hits apiece. Simonds collected three RBIs and Linton crossed the plate three times.

Devon Morrison recorded her eighth win of the season in the circle, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out four.

After both teams scored a run in the first inning, Newberry broke the game open in the second, scoring four runs on four hits. The Wolves added to the lead in the third, thanks to an RBI single by Morgan Sweeny.

Simonds cranked her fifth home run of the season, striking a parked vehicle as the ball sailed over the left center fence in the fourth. The Wolves closed the game out in the fifth, scoring three runs for the 11-3 final score.

Hailey Drawe led Newberry at the plate in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Simonds had another great outing, recording two hits and two RBIs. Newberry collected 13 hits as a team.

St. Augustine’s bats would be the difference in game two, as the Falcons scored two quick runs in the first and second innings thanks to home runs by Tamiera Sanchez and Haley Sessoms.

St. Augustine’s led 6-1 after four innings, but Newberry would not go away quietly. Newberry scored three runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Wolves’ deficit to 6-4. Sweeny, Drawe and Simonds all recorded RBI singles in the inning.

Newberry inched ever closer as Simonds notched a single to left that plated Shannon McCann, slicing the Falcons’ lead to just one after six innings. The Wolves had a runner on first in the seventh, but St. Augustine’s held on for the 6-5 win.

The Wolves left 10 runners on base and hit 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Sanchez led St. Augustine’s offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Emily Marchbanks took the loss, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Meranda Zanni allowed 13 hits but just two earned runs to notch the win for the Falcons.

Newberry will host Erskine (6-8) on Tuesday at the Smith Road Complex. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
