Newberry Earns Sweep of Lander
Tuesday, February 28, 2017 | by Bryan Eckelberg, Athletic Communications Assistant

NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team used clutch pitching and timely hitting to sweep Lander Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves won both games by identical 3-2 final scores.

Lander (7-11) got on the board first in the second inning of game one, but Newberry (12-5) answered in the bottom of the frame. Myranda Dills and Tori Caldwell notched back-to-back RBI-singles, giving the Wolves a 2-1 advantage.

Newberry grabbed a vital run in the fourth, thanks to Haley Simonds’ third home run of the season. The freshman received a pitch in the zone and smashed it over the right centerfield fence.

The Bearcats moved within one after plating a run in the fifth inning. Lander had the bases loaded and Devon Morrison worked out of the jam, surrendering only one run.

Emily Marchbanks relieved Morrison in the circle, allowing only two Bearcat baserunners over the final two innings.  She got Madison Moor to fly out to left field, giving Newberry the 3-2 game one victory.

Dills went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Rachel Marion recorded two hits and a run scored. Simonds and Caldwell also notched RBIs for Newberry.

Morrison recorded her seventh win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings allowing just one earned run. Marchbanks notched her first save of the season after allowing a hit and a walk over two innings.

In the nightcap, Newberry scored three runs over the first two innings and it would be all the runs that they would need.

Marion notched an RBI-single to right, scoring Natalie Willis in the first inning. Hailey Drawe scored on an error, bringing Newberry’s lead to 2-0.

Willis hit a screamer down the left field line that plated Morgan Sweeny in the second, giving the Wolves a 3-0 advantage.

Lander answered in the third and the fifth innings, thanks to RBIs by Brianna Surr, cutting Newberry’s lead down to 3-2.

After Newberry failed to score in the fifth, Lander had a chance to tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh. The Bearcats had a runner on second with two outs, but Marchbanks fooled Logan Levere on a pitch that painted the inside corner for the strikeout, giving Newberry the sweep over Lander with a 3-2 win.

Marchbanks pitched a complete game, grabbing the win after allowing five hits and two runs. The junior also notched five strikeouts.

Willis led Newberry at the plate in game two, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Newberry will host St. Augustine’s (2-5) for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
