ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Mallory Gerndt hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth against Florida Southern to record the game-winning RBI as the Newberry College softball team split a pair of games in St. Augustine on Saturday. The Wolves defeated the Moccasins in game one 1-0 before falling to Tampa 10-2 at Flagler Field.

After Devon Morrison recorded an inning-ending strikeout with two Florida Southern runners on base, Kendall Tipton was placed as a pinch runner on second. Maggie Herrera sacrificed Tipton to third base to bring Gerndt to the plate. Gerndt then hit a deep fly ball to centerfield to plate Tipton for the game-winning RBI.

Natalie Willis
recorded Newberry only hit against the Mocs on a double in the third inning. Tori Caldwell swiped second as a pinch runner in the fourth.

Morrison recorded her second win of the season, tossing four shutout innings and recording seven strikeouts. Emily Marchbanks gave up two hits in her 4.0 innings, striking out one and walking one.

Florida Southern left eight runners on base and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Brandi Jones moved to 0-2, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out six for Florida Southern.

Tampa scored six runs in the sixth inning to break open a close contest and defeat Newberry by a final of 10-2. The Wolves got on the board early after Chrisitna Linton doubled to right center to plate Rachel Marion. The Spartans then scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.

Willis ripped an RBI double to center to score Morgan Sweeney and pull Newberry within two runs in the fifth inning.  Tampa scored six runs on four hits in the sixth to down the Wolves.

Four different Newberry players recorded a hit. Willis and Linton both collected two-out RBIs. Marchbanks allowed four hits and three runs in 1.1 innings pitched to take the loss.
