GAFFNEY - The Newberry softball team split on the afternoon at Saints Field taking game one from Limestone 6-4, before the Saints earned an 8-3 win in the getaway game.

Senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) recorded five hits and three runs batted in on the day, while junior Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) struck out two as she earned a complete game victory in game one.

Newberry moves to 18-22 overall, while the Saints now sit at 22-16 overall.

The Wolves travel to Charlotte on Thursday for a conference doubleheader against the Queens Royals at 2 p.m.

Game One: Newberry 6, Limestone 4
[Box Score]

Basch drove in three as the Wolves earned a game one victory over the Saints.

After two scoreless innings, the Wolves saw senior Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) draw a two-out walk before junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) singled to center. A double to left center by Basch plated Capobianco and Ayres. A throwing error allowed junior Gabby Bedard to reach safely and provided Basch an opportunity to scamper home for the third run of the inning.

Limestone responded with one run in the third, before the two teams were unable to continue the offense in the fourth.

Newberry's offense regained life in the fifth as sophomore Lanier Paul (Bufford, Ga.) singled to lead off the inning. A bunt single by Capobianco saw runners on first and second, before another bunt single put Ayres on first and pushed the runners up a base.

A wild pitch saw Paul scoot home, before Basch singled in Capobianco. Basch's RBI single was followed by one from Bedard before the inning ended with the Wolves leading 6-1.

Limestone plated three in the bottom of the fifth, before the Wolves held the Saints scoreless to earn a 6-4 victory in game one.

Game Two: Limestone 8, Newberry 3
[Box Score]

Ayres and Basch each finished with two hits in the Wolves game two loss to the Saints.

Limestone's offense exploded for four runs in the first, before adding another in the second.

The Wolves looked to claw back from the early deficit as Ayres doubled to left center to lead off the third. A bunt single from Basch put Ayres at third, where she would score as Bedard reached safely on an error. A walk loaded the bases, where with two outs a hit by pitch saw the Wolves plate a second run.

Limestone cushioned its lead with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) doubled to lead off the Wolves' half of the seventh. A one out double from freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) notched Newberry's third and final run, as the Saints shutdown the Wolves' next two hitters and earned an 8-3 victory.
