Pioneers pitch past Wolves in pair of tight games
Saturday, April 5, 2014

NEWBERRY - The Newberry softball team played its fourth extra innings game in seven games as the Wolves fell in a pair of South Atlantic Conference games to the visiting Tusculum Pioneers.

Juniors Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) and Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) combined for 10 strikeouts, while freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) hit her fifth homer of the season as the Wolves fell 3-2 the nine inning game one, before dropping a 2-0 decision in game two.

The Wolves fall to 17-21 on the season and 4-10 in conference play, while the Pioneers improve to 22-20 overall and 8-6 in SAC action.

Newberry wraps up non-conference play on Tuesday at Limestone, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game One: Tusculum 3, Newberry 2 (9 innings)
[Box Score]

Three Wolves recorded two hits each, while Drawe homered to left in Newberry's extra innings loss to the Pioneers.

Newberry opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Drawe hit a home run to left with one out in the frame. A single by sophomore Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.) was followed by a strikeout and ground out to wrap up the inning for the Pioneers with only one run of Newberry damage.

The top of the fourth saw the Pioneers plate a run to tie the game at 1-1.

It wasn't until the top of the eighth that either team would score another run as the Pioneers pushed one across in the top of the inning.

The bottom half of the frame saw the Wolves start the inning with senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) on second base due to the International Tiebreak Rule.

Basch moved to third on a bunt single by junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.). A stolen base by Bedard put two runners into scoring position, but the Wolves were only able to plate one as senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Basch before the Wolves ran out of outs in the eighth.

Tusculum saw one run score in the top of the ninth, before the Pioneers shutdown the Wolves in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 3-2 victory.

Burnett struck out six in nine innings of work.

Game Two: Tusculum 2, Newberry 0
[Box Score]

Middleton finished the Wolves' game two loss with four strikeouts, while Drawe recorded the Wolves' lone hit in the second game.

Newberry's first baserunner of the second game came in the second when Drawe singled with two outs and Nellums was hit by a pitch. With two on and two outs the Wolves were unable to move the runners as sophomore Lanier Paul (Buford, Ga.) grounded out to short.

The two pitchers battled through five scoreless innings, before the Pioneers plated a pair in the sixth. Newberry was unable to answer, seeing only one runner reach first safely in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wolves saw only three hitters reach base safely in the second game of the doubleheader.
