WINGATE, N.C. - After a seven inning loss game in the doubleheader opener the Newberry softball team fell in extra innings in the getaway game to the homestanding Wingate Bulldogs at the Wingate University Softball Complex.
Junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.), as well as seniors Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) and Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) recorded multi-hit games as the Wolves fell 8-3 in game one and 6-5 in the ten inning second game.
The Wolves fall to 17-19 on the season and 4-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Bulldogs improve to 28-12 and 10-2 in the SAC.
Newberry returns to the Smith Road Complex on Saturday to play host to Tusculum at 1 p.m.
Game One: Wingate 8, Newberry 3
Basch and Hosking led the Wolves at the plate as the Bulldogs toppled the Wolves 8-3 in the opener.
Trailing 7-0 heading into the top of the fifth, Newberry opened the inning with back-to-back infield singles by Ayres and Basch. A hit by pitch placed junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) on first to load the bases.
A double to left center by Hosking scored a pair, while Bedard scampered to third. A fielder's choice by freshman Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.) plated Bedard for the Wolves' third and final run of the ball game.
Wingate pushed one final run across the plate in the sixth, to take an 8-3 decision.
Game Two: Wingate 6, Newberry 5 (10 innings)
Junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) went the distance in the circle, while Ayres wrapped a pair of hits in the Wolves' loss to the Bulldogs in the second game of the doubleheader.
Ayres led off the game with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After the second out of the inning was made, an error by the Bulldogs allowed Ayres to score the games' first run.
Wingate responded in the bottom of the frame, before the two offenses were held scoreless over the next six innings.
With senior Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) placed on second, based on the international tiebreak rule, the Wolves soon saw Capobianco on third with one out after a sacrifice bunt by Ayres.
A sacrifice squeeze bunt by Basch plated the first run of extra innings for the Wolves.
As they did in the first inning, the Bulldogs responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Neither offense was ready to quiet as the ninth opened with Bedard reaching third on a sacrifice, only to score a batter later as sophomore Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) singled through the right side. Putnam's RBI was all the Wolves got in the ninth, before Wingate plated a run in the bottom of the inning to push the game to the 10th inning.
The 10th started with senior Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) on second, before she moved to third on a bunt single by Capobianco. Ayres' single to left center plated Yancey and saw Capobianco move to second.
Capobianco would score after a pop fly and an error to give Newberry a 5-3 lead.
The Wolves were unable to hold the lead as the Bulldogs scored three in the bottom of the tenth to earn the victory.
