FLORENCE- The Wolves softball team traveled to Florence, earning a doubleheader split on Wednesday against Francis Marion.

Junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) led the team at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Bedard extended her hitting streak to 10 games with hits in both halves of the doubleheader. Junior Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) earned the win in game one against the Patriots.

Newberry is now 8-3 on the season, while the Patriots sit at 5-3. The Wolves travel to Erskine on Monday, February 24, for a doubleheader.

Game One: Newberry 4, Francis Marion 3

After remaining scoreless through two innings, Francis Marion plated three in the bottom of the third inning on Wolves sophomore pitcher Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.).

Starting off the inning with a hit by pitch and an error, the Patriots scored three unearned runs off of one hit.

Newberry responded quickly in the top of the fourth with a leadoff single down the left field line by freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.). Two walks loaded the bases for junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.), who singled down the left field line scoring two.

The Wolves plated two more in the top of the seventh when two throwing errors placed two on base. Bedard doubled to right-center scoring two unearned runs, making the score 4-3.

With a solid defense behind her, Burnett earned the win with four scoreless innings pitched and four strikeouts.

Game Two: Francis Marion 7, Newberry 3

Francis Marion struck for runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth building a comfortable lead for a 7-3 victory in Wednesday's second game.

The Wolves answered with a run after Francis Marion scored one in the bottom of the second. Drawe walked, later advancing to second off of a sacrifice bunt from Ayres. Drawe then scored off of senior Danielle Basch's (Muskegon, Mich.) single through the right side.

In the top of the fifth, Newberry added two more runs to the board. A walk, error and a passed ball left two on base for junior Summer Bartek (Jefferson, Ga.) who singled through the right side scoring both.

Burnett struck out three in relief for the Wolves in game two, while Bartek led the Wolves at the plate with two RBI.
