Mike Hold was named Executive Director of the Newberry College Athletic Club in February 2010. He had previously served as Newberry College's associate athletic director for business since August 2009.
One of the University of South Carolina’s most celebrated quarterbacks, Hold was previously involved with Arena Football for 22 years.
Hold played quarterback for the Gamecocks on the legendary 1984 “Black Magic” team that went 10-2, as well as the 1985 team. He led USC in passing in the 1984 and 1985 seasons.
Following his collegiate career, Hold ventured to the NFL, where he was a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He went on to spend the majority of his career in the Arena Football League, quarterbacking eight different teams from the league’s inception in 1987 until 2000.
After completing his playing career, Hold moved to the sidelines as the head coach of the Augusta Stallions of Arena Football 2 (af2) in 2001 and 2002. He was the head coach of the Carolina Cobras of the AFL in 2003 and the Macon Knights of af2 in 2004 and 2005. Hold moved west to Las Vegas in 2006, where he was the offensive coordinator of the AFL’s Las Vegas Gladiators. Immediately prior to his move to Newberry, Hold served as the head coach of the Mahoning Valley Thunder from 2007 to 2009.
Originally from Tempe, Ariz., Hold is married to his wife Nicole, a Columbia native, and the couple has a five-year old daughter, Hudsen.
