Wolves add 11 runners for 2016 cross country campaign

NEWBERRY - Newberry College head cross country coach Phil Peterson has announced the addition of 11 runners to the roster for the 2016 season. Eight men and three women will join the Wolves as they run across the state this fall.

Here are briefs on the 11 runners joining Newberry this fall:


MEN

Anthony Wells – Wade Hampton (H)
Wells is a two-time all-state cross country runner as well as the 2015 Region 5-AA champion. He was a seven-time all-region cross country runner and was the 2015 state runner-up in the 3200 meters in track & field. He finished 14th in the Class AA state meet (17:20) as senior with season-best time of 17:10.68 at the Sandhills Invitational. He finished 13th in the Class AA state meet (17:11.49) as a junior and 11th in Class AA state meet (17:08.44) as a sophomore, which was high school career-best time. He also runs distance in the outdoor track spring season where he is a two-time Region 5-AA champion in the 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and 4x800 meters relay. He was also the region champion in the 800 meters as a junior and runner-up as a senior. At the Lower State qualifier meet as a junior he placed in the top four in the 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and 4x800 meters relay. He was the state runner-up in the 3,200 meters, placed fourth in th 4x800 meters relay and placed eighth in the 1,600 meters.

Carlos Hernandez – Mid-Carolina
Carlos Hernandez is a two-time all-state cross country runner and has earned seven all-region honors in his high school career - two in cross country and five in track and field. He placed 12th in the Class AA state meet (17:18) as senior, which was his season-best time. He placed 15th in Class AA state meet (17:13.62) as junior, which was his best time as a high school runner. Also placed 85th in Class AA state meet (19:17.96) as sophomore and 83rd as a freshman (19:34.33). As a senior, he was the runner-up at both the regional race and the Upper State race to new teammate Jorge Hernandez. In track, Carlos Hernandez has multiple regional and Upper State top eight finishes in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and 4x800 meters relay. He has a personal best time of 16:58 which he recorded at 2A Upper State in 2015 in which he was runner up.

Jorge Hernandez – Pelion
Jorge Hernandez is the 2015 AA Upper State Champion and Region 3-AA Champion, outpacing new teammate Carlos Hernandez in those meets. He has been named all-region twice in cross country and eight times in track and field, with three regional championships. He won three cross country races as a senior with five top five placements, including a career-best time of 16:43 in the Pelion Invitational. He placed 30th in the Class AA state meet (18:03) as senior, 97th in the Class AA state meet (19:16.78) as junior and 75th in the Class AA state meet (18:58.68) as sophomore. He has run in the 800 and 1600 meters and the 4x800 meter relay in his junior and senior seasons and has won the 4x800 meters relay twice and the 3,200 meters once. At this year's regional meet he did not finish out of the top two in any race.

Mike Richter – James Island
Richter has recorded a season- and career-best time of 17:37 at the Lake Murray Invitational and finished 132nd in Class AAAA state meet (18:38). He has run the 800 and 1600 meters in his senior season in track and earned all-region honors in the 4x800 meter relay.

Quinn Wilson – Hillcrest
Wilson recorded four top 10 finishes in his senior season, including a season- and career-best time of 16:39.83 at the Starlight Reservation Run. He earned all-region honors in cross country as a senior and is a three-time all-region runner in the track and field season. In his senior outdoor track season, Wilson has run the 800 and 1600 meters with a runner-up finish in the 1600 meters at the Hillcrest Ram Invitational and qualified for the state meet with a runner-up finish in the 1600 meters at the region meet. 

Shelton Reynolds – Colleton Co.
Reynolds was 113rd in the Class AAAA state meet (18:07) with a career-best time of 17:45 at the Lake Murray Invitational. He has been a standout in the 3200 meters in the spring, finishing as runner-up at the Gamecock Invitational with a time of 11:10.88. Reynolds has also earned all-region honors and qualified for the state meet in the 4x800 meter relay.

Zack Irick – Powdersville
Irick was 141st in the Class AA state meet (21:23) as a senior and set a career-best time of 20:04.62 at the Palmetto Invitational. He also finished 133rd in Class AA state meet (20:56.85) as a sophomore.

Mondricous Hatton – Palmetto
Hatton came on the scene as a senior and had two top 10 finishes. He placed 48th in Class AAA state meet (17:53) and had a career-best time of 17:05 at the Region 1-AAA meet. 


WOMEN

Brittani Barratt – Stratford
Barratt is a two-time state qualifier in both cross country and track and has been named all-region twice in the track season. She went 103rd at the Class AAAA state meet (21:56) as a senior after setting a career-best time of 21:15.19 in junior season Class AAAA state meet (99th). She has excelled as senior in outdoor track season in the 4x800 meters relay, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. Barratt's personal best is 20:48 which was recorded at the 4A Lower State Qualifier in 2014.

Emily Shuler – Pinewood Prep
Shuler is a five-time state cross country qualifier and three-time SCISA all-state honoree. She is a three-time all-region honoree and won the regional championship in the 3,200 meters as a junior. She is not competeing in the spring track season in her senior campaign. She finished 10th as a junior at SCISA Class AAA state meet (19:55.71) to help Pinewood Prep to state championship. Also finished 10th at SCISA Class AAA state meet (20:04.02) as a sophomore to help Pinewood Prep to state title. Shuler's personal best is 19:39 which was recorded at the Low Country Invite in 2013.

Alex Zimmer - Stratford via Columbia College
Prior to running distance track for the Koalas as a freshman in spring of 2016, Zimmer was a three-time Class AAAA cross country state qualifier. She was an all-region and all-state performer in 2013, placing 14th at the state meet with a 19:07 time. Her personal best is 18:35 recorded at the Low Country Invite in 2013.
