SPARTANBURG - The Newberry men's and women's cross country opened their season on Friday at the Eye Opener Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina Upstate.
The men's team ran their way to an impressive eighth place finish out of the 17 team field with 245 overall points. Nathan Collier led the way for the Wolves finishing 22nd overall with a time of 28:19. and earning 25 points.
Also for Newberry was a 40th overall finish by Charlie Cook who ran a 29:23. and after him were six runners who placed between 66th and 90th place. Alex Holshoe finished 66th with a time 31:09 followed by Austin Sorensen in 72nd at 31:22., Peter Hackett in 75th at 31:38, Austin Weaver in 78th at 31:41, Connor Roudabush in 83rd at a time of 31:54, and Morgan Woods in 90th with a time of 32:17.
B.J. Young and Taylor Dennard rounded out the pack for the Wolves with 109th and and 123rd place finishes.
The women's team came in with a 17th place finish out of 18 teams with 454 points. Danielle Cruz was the top runner for Newberry with a time of 23:11. Rebecca Eddy finished in 111th with 24:07. closely followed by Romina Adum at 24:20.
The remaining four runners were Andrea Morrell in 121st at 24:30, Kelley Strong in 133rd with 26:16, Makaylyn Higgins at 137th at 26:25 and rounding them out was Diana Terrell at 26:49.
The Wolves next meet will be Sept. 20th at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
