CHARLOTTE - The Newberry men's cross country team ran to a 19th place finish, while the women finished 26th in the non-Division I field of the Royal Cross Country Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park.
Newberry's next scheduled competition is the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship on October 26 to be held in Black Mountain, N.C.
The Newberry men were led by junior Nathan Collier (Weatherford, Texas), who finished 58th in the field of 222 runners with a time of 27:21.
The second Newberry scorer was junior Austin Sorensen (Murrieta, Calif.) at 88th place with a time of 28:06. Sophomore Peter Hackett (Sumter, S.C.) placed 92nd at 28:11, freshman Conner Roudabush (Goose Creek, S.C.) was 160th at 30:30, junior B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) finished 179th at 31:21, freshman Christian Lawyer (Ladson, S.C.) was 217th at 37:23 and freshman Taylor Manning finished 221st at 38:13.
On the women's side it was junior Rebecca Eddy (Eugene, Ore.) who was the top finisher in the Newberry contingent. Eddy finished 162nd with a time of 22:18 against a field of 240 non-Division I runners. Eddy's time was her best of the 2013 season.
Junior Kelley Strong (Union, S.C.) finished 167th at 22:29, senior Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was 176th at 22:47, freshman Makaylyn Higgins was 187th at 23:15 and sophomore Diana Terrell finished 205th at 24:05.
