COLUMBIA - Fresh off being named a Preseason Second Team All-SAC runner, junior Nathan Collier paced the Wolves to a third place finish in the men's 5K at the Gamecock Cross Country Invitational No. 1, while the Newberry women earned a fifth place finish.
The Wolves continue the 2013 cross country schedule on September 14 in Montreat, N.C., at the Hyder-McMahill Invitational.
Collier (Weatherford, Texas) led the Wolves in their opening race of the season at Fort Jackson's Hilton Field with a fourth place finish. Collier's 16:56 time left him as the top NCAA competitor in the 51-man field.
Junior Austin Sorensen (Murrietta, Calif.) was 11th at 17:57, sophomore Peter Hackett (Sumter, S.C.) was 14th at 18:19, freshman Conner Roudabush (Goose Creek, S.C.) was 15th at 18:29 and junior Alex Holshoe (Hopkins, Mich.) rounded out the Wolves' scoring as he finished 16th at 18:40.
Freshman Seth Howe (Simpsonville, S.C.) finished 17th at 18:58 and junior B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) finished 23rd at 20:13, but did not factor into the team scoring.
The Wolves finished third among the six team field.
Freshman Kirsten Nottingham (Murrieta, Calif.) posted a top-20 finish in her first collegiate race as she finished 19th at 21:59 against a field of 52 as she led the Wolves to a fifth place finish.
Freshman Makaylyn Higgins (Easley, S.C.) was 24th at 24:05, senior Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was 25th at 24:16, senior Ariel Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) was 27th at 24:42 and junior Rebecca Eddy (Eugene, Ore.) was 29th at 25:13.
Sophomore Diana Terrell (Greer, S.C.) was 31st at 25:39 and junior Kelley Strong (Union, S.C.) was 34th at 25:49, but did not factor into the team scoring.
The Wolves placed fifth in the seven team field.
