TOWSON, Md. - Newberry College cross country runner Jessie Baldwin has been named a third team Capital One Academic All-America in cross country and track field, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Wednesday.

Baldwin, a recent graduate of Newberry from Camden, finished her collegiate career with a 4.0 grade point average earning a degree in Biology.

In being the first women's cross country runner in school history named Academic All-America, Baldwin joins a list of 13 all-time Academic All-Americas from Newberry. Baldwin becomes the second cross country runner in school history to earn the honor as she joins former men's runner Brandon Downey, who was a third team honoree in 2002. Baldwin is one of four Newberry student-athletes to earn Academic All-America status during the 2012-13 academic year, marking the largest class in the school's history and the fifth consecutive academic year with at least one Academic All-America.

Baldwin joined the cross country team part way through the 2012 cross country season and immediately earned South Atlantic Conference Runner of the Week honors after she finished third in her first collegiate race at the Bulldog Stampede with a 5-kilometer time of 19:44.

At the Queens Challenge, the Wolves harrier was the number four Division II finisher with a time of 19:02.7 on the 5-kilometer course. At the end of the season, Baldwin made Newberry history with a seventh place finish at the SAC Championships, earning her first-team all-SAC Honors and making her the first Newberry woman to earn such honors.

Baldwin was named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll during the 2012-13 academic year, and was named Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. At Newberry, Baldwin was a member of the Summerland Honors Program, served as a Student Marshal and earned Dean's List recognition all eight semesters. Graduating as a Bachman Honors Society member, Baldwin finished her collegiate career in the top 10 percent of the graduating class.

In addition to academic and athletic success, Baldwin served as President of the Blue Key Honor Society, Public Relations Chair of Chi Beta Phi National Scientific Honorary and was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. During Newberry's annual awards convocation, Baldwin was named Newberry College's Greek Woman of the Year.
