WINGATE, N.C. - Individual top 10 finishes in both the men's and women's races highlighted a much improved performance for the Newberry Wolves at the Wingate Bulldog Stampede on Saturday.
WOMEN'S 5k RACE
Senior Jessie Baldwin (Camden, S.C.) ran in her first collegiate race with an excellent showing, completing the 5-kilometer course in 19:44 to finish in third place individually. She was 35 seconds behind the race winner and only one second out of second place.
The Wolves finished ninth in the 10-team event. Rebecca Eddy (Eugene, Ore.) was 48th with a time of 22:57, Kelley Strong (Union, S.C.) was 60th at 24:30, Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) was 61st at 24:35, Hannah Rohrer (Taylors, S.C.) was 69th at 26:22, Diana Terrell was 73rd at 27:29 and Kristen Smith was 80th at 34:31.
MEN'S 8k RACE
Michael Waltrip finished in eighth place with a time of 27:40 to lead the Wolves to a fifth place finish in the eight-team field. Waltrip cut 28 seconds from his time at the CofC Invitational two weeks ago to earn his second consecutive top-10 finish.
Nathan Collier finished in 17th at 28:12, Alex Holshoe was 31st at 30:05, Peter Hackett was 33rd at 30:23, Austin Sorensen was 36th at 30:42 and Termaine Harvey was 45th at 31:52.
Both teams resume action at the UNC Charlotte Invitational on Friday.
