Newberry XC competes at Eye Opener Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Newberry College cross country men's and women's programs competed at the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday morning.

The men had seven entraints into the field with junior Bradley House (Lexington, S.C.) as Newberry's top individual finisher in 26th place running a 29:12. Senior Ty Skinner (Woodruff, S.C.) finished in 56th with a 31:35 and senior Seth Utley (Columbia, S.C.) landed in 66th with a time of 32:15.

The scarlet and gray finished in 13th as a team with 290 total points. King College won the overall championship with a total score of 39 including individual meet champion Daniel Hamilton.

The Newberry women did not have enough participants to qualify for the team competition, but three runners made 2009 debuts at the Eye Opener. Junior Ashton Sullivan (Barnwell, S.C.) finished in 53rd with a time of 23:12. Senior Jennifer Johnson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) finished in 78th place after running a 24:38 and junior Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) took 24:51.

The womens team champion was also King College which also boasted the individual meet winner Carrie Nelson.
