Newberry's Jennifer Johnson makes preseason All-SAC squad

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The South Atlantic Conference preseason polls and all-conference teams for men's and women's cross country were announced Friday morning by the league office in Rock Hill, S.C.

Receiving 25 points in the preseason poll, the Newberry College women's cross country team is predicted to finish seventh. The scarlet and gray fell seven points behind Lincoln Memorial University and two points ahead of Brevard College and Tusculum College.

Sitting on top of the poll is 2008 SAC Champion Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Bears garnered eight first place votes and accumulated 80 points. Wingate University picked up one first place vote and totaled 63 points. The Bulldogs are picked second, followed by Mars Hill College in third (57), Carson-Newman College in fourth (56), and Catawba College in fifth (46).

Senior Jennifer Johnson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was named to the All-SAC second team. Johnson had three top-30 finishes last year including placing 24th at the 2008 SAC Tournament held in Chapin, S.C. at Crooked Creek Park.

Lenoir-Rhyne placed four individuals on the first team, while Wingate had one first team honoree and three on the second team.

The Newberry men's cross country team was picked to finish in ninth place in the SAC men's preseason poll. The scarlet and gray amassed 20 points in the poll, falling three behind Brevard College for eighth place.

Mars Hill, the 2008 SAC Champions, racked up eight first place votes and 80 total points for the preseason ranking of number one in the conference. The Lions had three runners named to the preseason men's all-conference team.

Lenoir-Rhyne was voted into second place with 71 points and the Bears received one first place vote. Wingate is picked third with 61 points followed by Lincoln Memorial (47) in fourth, Carson-Newman in fifth (38), Tusculum (35) in sixth, and Catawba (30) in seventh.

Newberry's first meet comes at The Eye Opener Invitational on September 5 in Spartanburg, S.C.
