Newberry College competes at Eye Opener Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Newberry’s cross country teams kicked off the 2005 season this past weekend at the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg. The Indians had a good first meet for the season as both teams’ runners worked out the off-season kinks and competed well.

The women had the most impressive run on the day as they finished 18th out of 25 teams. Heather Warren led the way with a time of 22:54.57, finishing 68th and garnering 62 points for Newberry. Laura Banda followed her with a time of 23:10.17, finishing 75th and getting 69 points for the Scarlet and Gray. Newberry collectively compiled 445 points, finishing 18th. Wingate won the women’s team title with 73 points.

The men performed well also, finishing 19th out of 22 teams. Jack Holden led the way for Newberry, finishing 80th with a time of 31:44.05, receiving 68 points for the Indians. Josh Williams followed him with a time of 34:12.47, getting 96 points. Newberry collectively received 496 points, finishing 19th. Mars Hill won the men’s team title with a total of 28 points.

Both teams now head to Greenwood, S.C., on Sept. 10 as they compete in the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Lander University.
