HILTON HEAD ISLAND – Newberry turned in an impressive 9-0 win on Monday afternoon on Hilton Head Island, winning each matchup in straight sets on its way to a 9-0 victory over Salem University (W.Va.).
The Wolves have now won six straight matches dating back to a 5-4 win over Limestone on Feb. 17 and have an overall record of 11-2 on the season.
The tandem of Edison Ambarzumjan and Alex Amble quickly disposed of their opponents 8-2 to start off the scoring for Newberry at the third doubles flight. Angel Pizarro and Nikhil Mannepalli followed with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles before Jordan Monosky and Jose Navarro earned an 8-4 decision at the second pairing.
Navarro took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles moments before Mannepalli clinched the win for Newberry with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Newberry cruised to the win at the final four singles positions. Ambarzumjan, playing at the top flight, was locked in the closest battle of the day but was able to take a 6-4, 6-4 win. Pizarro earned a win by a 6-3, 6-4 final margin at the No. 2 position. Monosky was dominant at the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, while No. 6 player Amble earned a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Newberry continues its Hilton Head Island road trip with a Tuesday matchup against Ferris State.
