ROCK HILL – The Newberry men’s tennis team swept Johnson C. Smith and Catawba 9-0,8-1 in an early week double match up on Tuesday afternoon.
Newberry swept through doubles play over the Golden Bulls. Edison Ambarzumjan and Jose Navarro initiated the success of the Wolves, notching an 8-4 victory over their opponents. In flight two Jordon Monosky and Logan Adkins swept the Golden Bulls 8-0. Alex Amble and Angel Pizarro finished the doubles sets recording an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 doubles pairing.
The Wolves dominated singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Ambarzumjan picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, while at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, Navarro and Monosky shut out their opponents 6-0,6-0. Junior Nikhil Mannepalli edged his Golden Bulls opponent 6-1,6-1. In the remainder of singles matches for Newberry, Pizzaro and Amble finished off their counterpart in a 6-1,6-0 and 6-0,6-1.
The Wolves dominated the Indians of Catawba 8-1 after sweeping Johnson C. Smith. Ambarzumjan and Navarro recorded an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Pizarro and Mannepalli edged out their opponents 8-2 at No. 2, while Monosky and Adkins closed out doubles play after the Indians forfeited the set.
Newberry finished off their success route, taking the singles matches 5-1. Ambarzumjan was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 1 while Navarro won his match at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-3 final. Mannepalli battled his Indians' opponent, taking the set 7-5,8-7, and 11-9. Pizarro surpassed his opponent 6-2,6-1, while Adkins dropped his set 1-6,4-6. Amble finished off the singles round with a win via a forfeit.
