Wolves Advance to SAC Semifinal With Win Over Trojans

ROCK HILL – Fifth-seeded Newberry College advanced to the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship semifinal following a 5-2 win over fourth-seeded Anderson Thursday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

With the win in the Quarterfinal match, the Wolves move onto Friday’s semifinal where they will face top-seeded Queens (14-1, 11-0 SAC) at 9:00 a.m.  

Newberry (17-6), who lost 8-1 to Anderson (18-6) in their only prior meeting of the season, opened the match by taking a point at No. 2 doubles. Nikhil Mannepalli and Angel Pizarro collected the 8-3 victory for the Wolves. The Trojans won the other two doubles flights, topping
Newberry at No. 3, 8-5 and then at No. 1, 8-4.

Newberry needed four wins in singles play to earn the comeback victory over Anderson. Pizarro kicked things off with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Newberry tied the match after Edison Ambarzumjan scored a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1. Mannepalli continued the rally with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3.

The Wolves now needed just one just one more point to clinch the match. Jordan Monosky gave Newberry the point it needed, winning at No. 2, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.  The remaining singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6 went unfinished.
