Eagles edge Wolves in conference match

Eagles edge Wolves in conference match
Saturday, September 17, 2016 | by Tanner Swift, Athletic Communications Assistant

NEWBERRY – A late goal by Eagles (4-1, 1-0 SAC) Travis Whitt put the game out of reach for the Wolves (2-3, 0-2 SAC) as they fell 3-0 in Saturday afternoon’s match at Smith Road Complex.

A rifle from 30 yards out from Carson-Newman’s Polyminos Avgousti put the Eagles in an early lead in the 12th minute.

Even after the Eagles tallied their second goal of the game in the 61st minute from Tom Read, the Wolves were clipping at the heels of Carson-Newman all afternoon putting up ten shots in the match against a Carson-Newman team who finished last season 15-3-2 and 9-2 in the SAC.

Claus Simonsen and Sterling Wendt added five shots between them for the Wolves, however only two of the Wolves’ shots ended up on frame as Carson-Newman’s defense made a few blocks on great chances created by Newberry.

In a chippy game that had 31 fouls between the two teams, the Wolves couldn’t find a response squandering the many chances they had to get on the board.

Newberry will play their third straight game against a conference opponent on Wednesday Sept. 21, as they face off against Coker at Smith Road Complex at 1:00 p.m.
