Wolves win thriller in extra time

Wolves win thriller in extra time
Tuesday, September 6, 2016 | by Tanner Swift

NEWBERRY- Crossbar…post…third time’s a charm. A wide open Quintin Eisner shot a bullet over the North Greenville (0-1) keeper for a golden goal in a 2-1 win to give Newberry their first 2-0 start since 2007. Eisner’s finisher came moments after teammate Daniel Reyes hit the crossbar, followed up by Eric Brody hitting the post 30 seconds later.

“I just talked to the guys about trying to find a way to get it done,” head coach Bryce Cooper said to his team before the extra period.

The Crusaders knotted the game at one just shy of the 75th minute on a goal from Jonny Lind, after the ball found a way past Newberry keeper Brad Dixon and left Lind with just a tap in. This was all part of a strange second half in Newberry that brought seven yellow cards between the teams.

“Towards the end of the second half, both teams started to get a little tired but I think we had a little more drive than them,” said junior forward Davis Bryan who had five shots in the contest.

The Wolves ripped off 28 shots in the game, to the Crusaders eight. Three of those 28 shots came from Wolves forward Cammy Provan, who made a stellar one-on-one touch around a Crusader and put it past goalkeeper Mateo Barzola.

“We felt like we were a little better on the day, but in fairness to North Greenville, they battled really well in the second half and made it difficult on us,” said Cooper.

It was the first game of the season for the Crusaders, who looked to avenge their 1-0 loss to the Wolves last season.

The Wolves play their next match this Saturday, Sept. 10 at Division I Longwood University at 6:00 p.m.
