Murfreesboro, N.C.- The Newberry College men’s soccer team defeated Chowan University, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
Newberry took the first shot of the game 2:22 in with Davis Bryan looking for the goal with a header but it went wide. Ky Tyler took a shot on goal 10 minutes later but it was saved and 30 seconds later Bryan took another shot but it went wide again.
Newberry got on the board first at the 27:24 mark from Mario Stojkoski finding the back of the net. Lucas Ferreira took the assist when Stojkoski struck the ball far post and hit it just under the cross bar.
The Wolves kept the 1-0 lead through the rest of the first half.
Tyler took a shot seven minutes into the second half but it was saved by Marco Lujan. Tyler then took a header 12 minutes later but it went wide.
Stojkoski tallied his second goal of the season 70 minutes in by scoring from the top of the box while the Hawk’s goalie was out of place. Ferreira took the assist on the goal again. Chowan answered back in the 75th minute off a goal from Terell Wlliamson.
Newberry kept the 2-1 lead for the rest of the game getting the win. For the game, the Wolves took 13 shots with four on goal. Brad Dixon made two saves in goal and Ferreira led the team in shots with five.
The Wolves are back home on Saturday, October 17 for a conference match against Queens at 3 p.m.
