BELMONT, N.C.- The Newberry College Men’s Soccer team dropped their second game of the season to Belmont Abbey, 4-0. Both teams were 0-1 going into this match, Belmont Abbey lost to Lenoir-Rhyne 1-0 Thursday, while Newberry suffered a 6-0 defeat at Pfeiffer.

The score was tied until the Crusaders scored the first goal of the game. Declan McQuillan took a penalty kick 21 minutes into the first half giving them the goal. With just 1:23 left before halftime, Clay Dimick scored Belmont Abbey’s second goal.

A little over a minute in the second half Newberry took their first shot of the match. Davis Bryan hit a header toward the net but Belmont Abbey’s goalie snagged it near the post.

The Crusaders put the ball in the back of the net twice later on in the game to make the score 4-0.

In the last couple minutes of the game, Newberry had their best chance of the day to score when Dillon Pelton knocked a header toward the net. Pelton’s header hit the crossbar and bounced straight down to the goalie’s hands.

Newberry couldn’t find the back of net at all during the game, giving Belmont Abbey the win (4-0).

Newberry will travel to North Greenville on Wednesday, September 9. Start time will be 7 p.m.
