Wolves hang tough but fall in OT to No. 19 Wingate

WINGATE – The Newberry Wolves men’s soccer team got an early goal from Mario Stojkoski and despite a fighting effort, fell to the No. 19 Wingate Bulldogs 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.

The Wolves (5-8-1, 2-5-1) played up to the challenge of a top 25 team in what was a physical contest and had multiple chances to win the game.

Stojkoski (Skopje, Macedonia) opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the game. Senior Lucas Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) used a clever flick in a give and go to send Stojkoski into the box and he calmly beat the keeper to make it 1-0.

Jalin Butler (Columbia, S.C.) had a clear chance to double the lead in the 56th minute after Newberry pressured Wingate’s defense into a giveaway. Bulter got the ball at the top of the box with just him and the keeper but his finessed shot went just right of the post.

The Bulldogs would equalize just three minutes later as Shaun Gadsby laid off a pass for Aksel Juul who hit a line drive to the far post to beat goalkeeper Nick Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) and make it 1-1.

Wingate took the momentum and tried to get the game winner in regulation but the Wolves defense came up time and time again. Despite losing Stephen Harvey (Kingston, Jamaica) to injury, the defense held together and Lucido made six saves in the contest and faced 23 shots.

The best chance for Wingate came when they got a penalty kick awarded in 70th minute after one of their players had is ankle clipped and went down in the box. The attempt then clanged off the crossbar and left the game tied.

Later, Newberry effectively used the counter attack in the 78th minute as Butler laid one off for Sterling Wendt (Alpharetta, Ga.) who fired a shot and forced the keeper to make a leaping save.

The last chance for the Wolves came in the first overtime period as Paul Marie (Saint-Aubin-de-Bois, France) whipped in a left footed cross aimed for Butler who was making a long run. Butler dove head first for the ball but it was just a touch too far in front of him to put it in.

In the second overtime period, Wingate had the ball in the corner and Vicente Munoz whipped in a cross and Gui Peron had a diving header at the near post to give the Bulldogs the victory, 2-1.

Newberry returns to play at home on Wednesday against Coker at 12:30 p.m.
