BREVARD, N.C. – The Newberry men’s soccer team saw their SAC unbeaten streak come to an end on Thursday night as they dropped a 1-0 contest to the Brevard Tornados.
The statistics gave only a slight edge to Brevard as they outshot the Wolves 19-11 but only 6-4 in shots on target. Lucas Ferriera (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the Wolves with two shots on goal while freshman Paul Marie (France) had two shots along with Tomas Garcia (Vina del Mar, Chile), Sterling Wendt (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Ky Tyler (Nyack, N.Y.).
Senior goalkeeper Nick Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) made five saves in the game and only had to face two shots on goal in the second half thanks to a great defensive effort by Newberry.
The Wolves (4-4-1, 2-2-1) and the Tornados played a tight contest throughout the game until Winston Haddock broke the deadlock. At the 56:14 mark Haddock got on the end of a cross by Daniel Wheldon and tapped it in.
Newberry pushed forward but was unable to secure the equalizer as the time ran out. Newberry finished the game with three yellows and Brevard had two. The foul count was 12-10 towards Newberry and the Tornados held the edge in corner kicks 7-4.
The Wolves will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Charlotte to take on Queens at 2 p.m.
