HICKORY, N.C. - An 18th minute goal was all Lenoir-Rhyne needed as the Bears edged the Newberry men's soccer team 1-0 in Hickory on Saturday.
Lenoir-Rhyne (8-7-1, 3-5-1 SAC) and Newberry (1-14-1, 1-8-1 SAC) traded shots in the opening minutes of the match as two sides went back-and-forth for the opening four shots of the game. It was in the 18th minute that Alex Mather headed in a free kick to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The second period saw back-to-back shots from the Wolves before Lenor-Rhyne fired off eight-straight shots. The Wolves managed their third shot of the second period in the 68th minute of the match. Lenoir-Rhyne looked to add to its total as the clock wound down, but saw time expire on its attack.
The Bears outshot Newberry 21-9 in the match. Wolves' junior goalkeeper Nicholas Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) recorded nine saves on the day.
Newberry travels to Limestone on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match against the Saints.
