Duo scores in Wolves' 3-2 loss to in-state rival Anderson

Duo scores in Wolves' 3-2 loss to in-state rival Anderson
Wednesday, October 9, 2013

ANDERSON - Freshman Tomas Garcia tallied his second goal of the year and senior Jay Barajas netted his first goal of the year in Newberry's 3-2 loss to the homestanding Anderson Trojans.
Neither team was able to gain much momentum in the opening half as the two sides combined for 11 shots in the first period.

The Wolves (1-9-1, 1-4-1 SAC) fired off seven shots in the first half, but placed only one on frame as Anderson's (8-2-1, 4-2 SAC) Bo Haug recorded his first save of the day. Newberry senior Patrick Sweatt tallied one save of his own in the first half as the Trojans also placed one of their four shots on frame, only to see it turned away by Sweatt.

The second period proved to be a different kind of game as the first four minutes saw three goals between the two teams. The first goal of the match came in the 48th minute as Andre Carle stole the ball from Sweatt and scored his seventh goal of the season.

Only 23 seconds after Anderson struck the Wolves answered as sophomore Lucas Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) took control of a failed clearance. Ferreira found freshman Tomas Garcia (Vina del Mar, Chile) with a pass, which Garcia converted into his second collegiate goal.

The fast paced scoring however was not done after Garcia's game tying goal as William Treichler scored 40 seconds later to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.

Newberry pushed the attack after Triechler's goal with multiple shots over the next ten minutes. Anderson was able to push aside the Newberry attack and eventually turned a missed shot by Newberry freshman Michael McPeak (Chapel Hill, N.C.) into an opportunity.

Following McPeak's wide shot; Anderson quickly saw shot from Johnny Fana blocked by the Wolves' defense. The blocked shot led to a Martin Brain corner kick, which found Alex Delpy. Unable to score on his own, Delpy found Carle who netted his second goal of the afternoon.

Trailing 3-1 after 70 minutes the Wolves continued to try and rally against the Trojans. It was not until the 88th minute that the Wolves finally saw a result from their attack as Newberry took advantage of the long throw of freshman Jalin Butler (Columbia, S.C.). It was off of Butler's throw-in that Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) headed in for his first goal of the season.

Barajas' goal came a little too late for the Wolves as time expired after freshman Graham Jermstad (Irmo, S.C.) saw his 90th minute shot blocked by an Anderson defender, securing a 3-2 victory for the Trojans.

Garcia's goal was his second of the season, while Barajas found the scorers column for the first time in 2013. Butler picked up his second assist of the year as Ferreira picked up his first points of the year with his assist on Garcia's goal.

Newberry returns to the road on Saturday for a scheduled 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Carson-Newman.
