NEWBERRY - Freshmen Jalin Butler and Graham Jermstad placed shots on frame, but saw chance turned away as the Clayton State Lakers topped Newberry 5-0 at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday.

The Wolves (0-5) saw their first scoring chance stopped in the 12th minute as Butler's (Columbia, S.C.) headed opportunity was smothered by Clayton State's (3-1-1) Nick Punter. Another chance followed in the 30th minute when senior Jay Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) fired a shot off the post.

Trailing 1-0 after halftime, sophomore Anthony Lucido saw a corner kick fall back to his feet. In the 52nd minute he fired a shot from an acute angle, which sailed just outside the far post. Jermstad (Irmo, S.C.) saw his chance turned away in the 88th, with the Wolves trailing 5-0. The freshman lined up on a free kick opportunity before sending his shot into the hands of Punter.

Newberry junior goalkeeper Nicholas Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) recorded three saves in the loss.

The Wolves return to conference play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., when Newberry takes on Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn.
