Sweatt records six saves in Wolves' 1-0 loss to LMU

NEWBERRY - In the final game of the 2012 season the Newberry men's soccer team fell 1-0 to a visiting Lincoln Memorial, despite a six save performance from junior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt.

The Railsplitters (11-3-1, 6-3 SAC) scored the would-be game winner in the eighth minute, when a low cross from Mario Pinto was helped along by Chris Nash and finished from within six yards by Leonardo Germniani.

Neither team saw much success on the attacking end for the remainder of the opening half. The second half saw one of Newberry's (4-11-1, 0-8-1 SAC) best scoring chances when senior Kofi Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) blasted a shot toward the goal frame, but saw it ricochet off the woodwork.

“Disappointed in the result, but happy with the effort and attitude the boys showed throughout the 90 minutes,” said Newberry head coach Barry Slagle. “More importantly I am proud of our three seniors and the careers they had here at Newberry.”

Kufuor's denial by the post in the 56th minute was not the last crack at goal the Ghanaian had. In the 88th minute with the Wolves pushing up field, Kufuor found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper only to see his shot sail just right of the goal.

Lincoln Memorial managed to run out the clock to secure the 1-0 victory.

The Wolves wrap up the 2012 season with a 4-11-1 overall record. Newberry was led offensively by Kufuor's six goals, while in goal Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) posted a pair of clean sheets and recorded 62 saves on the season.
