BREVARD, N.C. - A conversion from the penalty spot by freshman Lucas Ferreira was the only offense the Newberry men's soccer team could muster as the Wolves were topped 2-1 on the road by Brevard.
It only took 24 seconds for Brevard (2-11-1, 2-6 SAC) to strike as Efren D. Escobar banked a shot off the post to put the Tornadoes up a goal early on. Newberry (4-10-1, 0-7-2) saw its first two shots miss the target, before a foul in the 26th minute inside the penalty area, allowed Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to score his third goal of the season. Ferreira's goal was the first of the season for Newberry from the penalty spot.
The match shifted in Brevard's advantage in the 31st minute when a second yellow card issued to Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) saw the senior off and put the Wolves a man-down the remainder of the match.
Newberry contained Brevard for much of the second half and even outshot the Tornadoes 10-6 in the second period. Brevard's first four strikes in the second half missed the goal, before Joel Jalanne scored off a rebound in the 85th minute for what would be the game winner.
The Wolves outshot Brevard 17-13, led by Ferreira's four attempts.
Newberry wraps up the 2012 regular season on Saturday with a 4 p.m. scheduled kickoff against Lincoln Memorial at the Newberry College Soccer Field.
